NOAH/PADF Fruit Proyect, Haiti
As part of the USAID-funded grant from 2002 to 2004, PADF worked with NOAH, a Haitian hometown a, to implement a fruit tree grafting and seedling productive activity in Valle de Jacmel, Haiti. Fruit tree nurseries were established by the local partners and participants were trained in various caretaking and grafting techniques. In addition, the local partners commissioned a market study to provide sales opportunities for their products in the Port-au-Prince area, and ultimately implemented many of the recommendations. Additionally, motivated by the program, the local partner groups (CODEVA and COREM) were strengthened as institutions by registering as local cooperatives with relevant ministries, opening bank accounts, and establishing and maintaining records of sales and inventories.
During the second year, despite several political and weather-related challenges, the project was still able to successfully produce and market over 39,000 fruit tree seedlings and grafts, establish local nurseries, and generate enough income for further investment in future seedling and grafting production.
PADF, through its local office, CODEVA, and COREM plan to continue working together to use this experience as a model for other local cooperatives around Jacmel and other areas.
