The Multiplying Action of Remittance Transactions El Tiempo Latino February 25, 2005 Translated by PADF Two new community projects were inaugurated recently in El Salvador through the Program Manos Unidas, which is supported by the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF), an organization based in Washington, D.C., and Banagrícola, a remittance transaction agency with branches in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, Wheaton, Gaithersburg, and Langley Park, Maryland. The two development projects were inaugurated with funds contributed by PADF and a percentage that Banagrícola contributes each time a Salvadoran carries out a remittance transaction out of one of their branches. The first project took place in Tejutla, in the department of Chalatenango, in the northern part of El Salvador, where the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and World Vision also participated, by distributing school packets (uniforms, notebooks, pencils, shoes, and other school supply for 500 students enrolled in the school). The Alliance of Communities Supporting Children and their Continuation in Education (ALCANCE) also participated. On the same day, the community of El Piche in El Carmen, La Unión, with support from Salvadorans in Los Angeles, inaugurated a computer center in the local school. “This is an example of what Programa Manos Unidas and the communities living in the United States can do for their communities and of their ability to work with a variety of organizations and donors like PADF, USAID, Banagrícola, and other entities,” pointed out Dale A. Crowell, project coordinator for PADF.
