New Call for Proposals for Manos Unidas La Prensa Gráfica March 16, 2005 Program Manos Unidas por El Salvador announced, in Washington, D.C., the second call for proposals for development projects, related to education in El Salvador. The call is for Salvadoran community organizations in Washington and Los Angeles to present new proposal to receive funds until May 15. The projects will be selected before June 30th, according to the call. Amy Coughenour, the Pan American Development Foundation’s (PADF) deputy director, informed that currently there are $240,000 available for development projects in El Salvador. PADF, a co-dependant of the United Nations, is a co-sponsor of Manos Unidas, along with Banco Agrícola. Manos Unidas por El Salvador was created in 2004 by both institutions with the objective of leveraging the impact of remittances, through development programs, in particular those related to supporting education. Banco Agrícola provides funds (by contributing 1.5% of what they receive from remittances); and PADF administers these funds, additionally, it offers training and other resources to Salvadoran immigrant organizations. “Last year, we received 10 proposals from community organizations, and this year we are hoping to get many more, since the Salvadoran community in the Washington and Los Angeles area is more familiar with the program,” Ernesto Magaña, representative of the bank, said. In 2004, Manos Unidas selected and supported six projects proposed by Salvadoran immigrant groups to carry out in their communities of origin in El Salvador.
