OAS and Banco Agrícola join their efforts:  for each remittance sent to the country, a percentage will be destined to aid and social development projects.

Yesterday, representatives from the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF) and Banco Agrícola formally inaugurated the construction of eight classrooms in the School Villa Los Angeles in the municipality of San Vicente.

The inauguration took place during a special act and was coordinated by PADF’s remittance program manager, Dale Crowell and Banco Agrícola’s director of communications, Joaquín Rivas.

The representative from Banco Agrícola  explained that the completion of this project, along with other throughout the country, was the result of an agreement signed last February between PADF, which is dependant on the Organization of American States (OAS), and Banco Agrícola through their Program Manos Unidas por El Salvador.

According to this agreement, for each remittance transaction, regardless of the quantity transferred, both organizations will contribute a monetary percentage to be destined to projects in different communities across the country.

As part of the program, last year, $65,000 were contributed for different projects at a national level.

In the case of the School Villa Los Angeles, the investment exceeded $10,000.  The project was proposed to Programa Manos Unidas by the Salvadoran Community in Los Angeles (California).

The Project

Sor Ana Gladis Portillo, principal of the school which has 456 students, explained that six of the rooms built will be used as classrooms, one as a chapel, and the other as a table tennis room.

According to the nun, before these classrooms were only divided by aluminum sheets and the ceiling became extremely hot; nevertheless, now they are pedagogically speaking adequate and ventilated.

“This is a blessing from God.  We are very thankful to him and with these institutions for their valuable help that will benefit the children directly”, she concluded.
